Interesting read, fair point that they are already breaking the possession part of the law but have received a special dispensation, they could apply and receive a dispensation for the sale as well.
I had a very similar experience, replace baling hay with mowing lawns. I was an awkward shy homeschool kid but going into circuit city and getting that 32mb mp3 player on Black Friday made me feel like the coolest kid in the world.
You can do the 2 weeks onsite onboarding thing, the issue is that once you starting hiring developers with families, that becomes a negative more than a positive.
We use a combination of a good quality trello board with some standard activities, good 1o1 scheduling for the first 2 weeks, and scoping out small independent tickets that gives an engineer a solid base to build on.
Slack has been invaluable, and also setting a standard of face to face webcam meetings being non optional. Yes even in a remote role.
Even in 2018, theres no replacement for being able to look at someone face to face and ask them "anything on your mind ?"
Other good things, having a regular all hands to get the entire team on the same page, and scheduling company retreats
Wouldn't you rather just set some base standards for construction and let people choose where to live? Greenspace rules, parking spot regulations all seem to stifle growth.
I would gladly pay for an extra spot, and I'm sure developers would build more monthly garages a la NYC.
Great read, I had someone do reply driven coding the other day in a screen share except they didn’t mention or speak about what they were doing 30 min into a problem and they had yet to open an editor!

We value learning and growth and the ability to make a big impact at a small company. Work life balance is important to us, and not something we just pay lip service to. We believe that we can make big changes happen and improve the daily lives of millions of people by bringing quality software to the federal space.

I am a huge apollo fan, but their endgame just became clear, get people using apollo, have those products scale and need monitoring and analytics, charge for said monitoring and analytics. I knew it was coming, just sad that it was all a cashgrab in the end.
I have mixed feelings on this, it seems to me it is doable, but it requires 2 important things:
1. The Junior has worked remote before. If you get someone where this is their first remote job, unless they're incredibly organized and have a remote strategy they will lose socialization and much more.
2. A ton of work on the manager's part. Mentoring sessions, checkins, very active communication channels etc.
