I bought a GPU off Amazon not too long ago. It had driver problems and they let me return it no questions asked, full refund and they covered shipping cost. I've never heard of anyone having issues with Amazon returns, and I've certainly never had issues with it myself.

There is nothing immoral about a country looking out for its own best interests. Maybe you find this situation unsightly but if this goes through without much change to the app, 99% of users won't care and will probably be somewhat relieved that their most used app is not property of the Chinese gov. Maybe you don't understand this but foreign policy is messy and aggressive and China is probably the best country at it (if you don't know what China's belt and road policy is, look it up). I don't know if your American but I'm can pretty safley assume you live in a western country because I find there is an infectious idea that western countries are too principled and shouldn't use their power and infuence to be manipulative or even interfere with trade regardless of whether it is good for them. In the end America needs stand up to China's bs and start playing the game like they are. They already own quite a bit of our debt and on our current trajectory it's only a matter of time before they are building ports and 5g towers in our country.

There is no other proprietary operating system platform that makes it nearly impossible for users to get software from third party sources, even apple's their own desktop OS does not restrict the user to an app store or repository. There are plenty of high quality apps "published all over the place" on those platforms. If the claimed benefits of the app store are so apparent then let the consumer decide that. The fee being high would not be a problem if they didn't arbitrarily disallow third party app vendors.

I agree with that intelligent machines pose a risk regardless of who has the best intentions, but its also true that certain countries (namely china) have demonstrated that they are more willing and motivated to use it for devious surveillance purposes.

Part of the point of the current US vetting process is to ensure judges have the same beliefs as the current party platform. Even if you put the political philosophy of judges on some sort of pedestal (which you probably shouldn't) they don't get appointed unless they have the "correct" politics.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think there has ever been successful change to the status quo by way of "telling friends and coworkers". Seems like an pointless crusade.

I find it interesting that obviously smart people (the guy who illustrated this) are unwilling to question whether science in and of itself is a noble and positive endeavour for humanity. It's always an argument like: if the scientific process was followed, or if academia was structured correctly, or if the gov didn't sponsor bad research, etc...

Most of the current world population is totally oblivious to scientific advancement, every civilization before 200 years ago probably had less than percent of the scientific knowledge we have now and what do we have to show for it. We live a bit longer and die less, that's about it. There's no other impacts science has had on the human experience that's an undebatable good, so why do people insist on this grandiose idea that if we just keep following science we'll eventually be an enlightened people.

But I guess that goes against most peoples preconceptions too much so just throw a panel at the beginning and end of your comic saying science is good.

50% of the US population came from the original founding stock of the country in 1990. America was not made great immigrants it was made great by British (plus some European) settlers that spoke English and followed Protestant Christian values.

Yes because I'm sure this attorney's work revolves around hiering CEOs and management positions. Point being that a tiny fraction of the people being brought here are not going to be employers and buissness owners. Most people are just taking jobs from Americans.

If your talking about transnational corporations that have a base of operation in a given country then they made a financial decision to invest in people and workers from that country, not game the system by bringing in foreign workers for cheaper wages.

How do you justify being an American whose work entierly revolves around taking jobs that Americans could have fulfilled and trying to give them to people who are not citizens, did not grow up here, and see America as nothing less than an institution they can use to get ahead?

I think you took the phrase too literally. I'm assuming by won they didn't mean that Ruby and PHP will dominate the web landscape for eternity. I'll just point out that dynamic programming languages have for most of the webs history been the primary tool for developers.

I think when you take a look at the interaction between science and government throughout history you will largely find “science” has mislead humanity at most steps along the way. Thats not to say it is never useful, just that it is a form of information that should be used by our society with extreme caution.

But fundamentally I disgree with your opinion that the real world is muddled and confusing. With issues like pandemics science is more nessisary because it is a specific and specialzed issue not many people understand well, yet it is directly impacting most of our lives.

But if you look at the Amish people for example, you can live your entire life knowing almost nothing about science live a have a happy, healthy and meaningful existence. Generalizing that example more we can see that successful flourishing human civilizations have existed for all of our history and all of the probably had less than a percent of the scientific knowledge we have today, yet we are suffering from mostly tge same issues: suicide, racism, sadness, disfunctional governments, power struggles, etc.

You say that science is illuminating but I fail to see where science has truly made any part of the human expience more enlightened.

Science is so muddled and confusing. I'm sure even the top doctors and biologists don't agree on how to handle the virus because one study says you x is more effective than y but another says the opposite. In addition most "science" is funded by done large corporations or by people with ulterior motives. Science is not the word of God; it's a craft that is extremely prone to error, and I personally don't want my gov placing any more value on it than it is right now.
