Honestly they have a lot of members including the BBC for some reason, Apple is one of them. It seems like it might just be good practice to support them, it signals ‘we are against child abuse’. Dropping support could lead to some bad headlines. Seems like an NGO that is really good at sales, probably putting some pressure on it’s members rather than the other way around.

I get that if you are an ngo that really wants to solve online child abuse you’d want a law like this. It may be mostly the ngo pushing for it, not necessarily big tech. I could be wrong.

Russia has banned the export of gasoline starting April 1st, because hits on infrastructure by Ukraine are causing internal shortages. They may be profiting in some other way but it’s unlikely through major exports.

Universal healthcare, social security. There has been a reduction in availability of care for the mentally ill in the country I live, which resulted in more homelessness, confused people on the streets etc.

Longer incarceration times in the US, fewer alternative punishments, lower rehabilitation and a higher inequality compared to similar countries. Recidivism in North-west Europe is around 25% compared to around 60% for the US, combined with longer and more prison sentences for comparable crimes quickly leads to much higher incarceration rates.

Excellent question, what happened is there are less people in a household than there used to be and households consume more m2 per household member. In reply to your second point, percentagewise there has been less building, in absolute terms there is more because of population growth since the 60s. This translates to ‘seeing more building projects’.

Sounds like meat producers may have lobbied for this, fearing the quickly diminishing costs of lab-grown meat, expect lab-grown meat to be labeled “high-processed therefor bad” as soon as it becomes widely available.

One of the things that concerns me most after studying agriculture for a couple of years is that people may definitely starve to fill other people’s gas tank. A lack of arable land is imminent and high income people at the gas pump, or eating meat (same economics) may well outspend those who don’t have enough food. Part of food inflation is attributed to biofuels. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethanol_fuel_in_Brazil

I remember a physics department that was funded by BP, on the provision they’d stop their research into solar technology.

I heard from someone working at a big car producer that they force EV’s to use the mechanical brakes every now and then because if not, they rust away.

Worse I’m afraid, chickens will give most eggs in their first year and are killed after, because they become unprofitable. I know an ecological farmer that charges a bit more for eggs and is able to keep them alive for 2 years, but that’s the max. They can easily live for 10 years plus.

I live in the Netherlands and I’d say we mostly have a system 3, there is little problematic homelessness, housing is often available to those not wanting to live on the street, shelters ban anyone intoxicated. Drug rehabilitation is available to the homelessness (including free alternative drug prescriptions). Public intoxication is policed. If I see someone living in a tent it’s exceptional enough to point it out to a friend.

I’ve been in a very similar situation and the advice I’d give myself back then is to seek psychological support for myself from the beginning, preferably a good therapist to help navigate this. It sounds like you’re making solid choices (and the same we made at the time) but you don’t control the outcome of this situation. It was the hardest thing I did in my life, best of luck to you.
