Really cool. A couple of things I'd like to see would be:
- Change the window title to something other than 'Dashboard', and add a favicon.
- Give me a way to get my data out. Dropbox syncing would be great - a folder for each category, and sync .md files into the folders. (Two way syncing would be even better)
People often overeat when they start exercising, either because they're hungry from the exercise, or because they feel can indulge a bit as a reward.
My view is that most people should ignore exercise and fix their diet first, only easing in to an exercise routine slowly once they start to see weight loss results.
I made a little applescript application so I can open the system colour picker with spotlight. That way I can use the palette at the bottom to save a the colours, and the developer picker extension to copy the code.
To build it just put 'choose color' into script editor and save it as an application.
You can calibrate them (by measuring your stride length) to be fairly accurate for walking. After a 5k run mine is usually out by about 10-20% compared to GPS, but I put that down to my running stride being longer.
For a server in New Zealand I assume it would be covered by our three strikes law (http://3strikes.net.nz). Rights holders can send infringement notices via the users ISP for a $25 fee. After three notices (from the same copyright holder) they can then take you to our copyright tribunal for damages.
From what I've heard some notices are being sent out, but RIAA have been complaining that the $25 fee is too high.
I do something similar now and then with a script that takes a photo and a screen grab every minute throughout the day. The resulting 1-2 min movies can be quite fascinating to watch (for me at least).
It's great that they are trying something different from iOS and Android, but I can't help thinking that most of the icons on those home screens look very similar. They seem to be mostly either a white icon on a plain square, or a photo. A bit of colour variation on the icons might make navigation a but faster.
I'm sure the price will drop if they catch on but, assuming it's basically a hacked jet-ski with a hose & harness attached to it, they still won't be cheap. A jet ski can set you back anywhere from $10k - $50k around here, so it's still a luxury item for most.
Funny to see this on HN after seeing something very similar at a Ramstein concert on Friday night. The singer has a cheek piercing which he feeds a wire through to light up his mouth.
The site is actually quite clean with ad-block installed. I had to go back and double check to see what you were talking about! http://imgur.com/jDtjS.png
I'm using Shellfish for Safari which does a nice job of hiding these widgets. Unfortunately it doesn't block them completely so they're still in the background slowing down page loads even if you can't see them.
There was an interesting opinion piece in New Scientist about radiation safety levels recently (31 July 2010). It looked at health studies from Hiroshima and Nagasaki and studies of chemotherapy patients that suggest that the current recommended radiation limit (1 millisievert per year) is overly cautious. The article went on to suggest that the recommendation be raised to a lifetime total of 5 sieverts at no more than 0.1 sievert per month.
