Sun’s mass is 2e30 kg.
E=mc^2 gives you max energy. (2e30 * 9e16).
Assume we start with one joule this year. Each year increasing energy output by 5%.
How long will it take till we use-up whole sun?
ln(2e30 * 9e16)/ln(1.05) = 2230 years
How long till we use up whole milky way? (Around 1.15e12 solar masses)
ln(2e30 * 1.15e12 * 9e16)/ln(1.05) = 2799
How long till we use-up whole universe? (10e53 kg)
ln(10e53 * 9e16)/ln(1.05) = 3348 years
Our potential is not limitless, exponential growth is not sustainable even on universe’s scale. Eventually we will reach hard wall.
2. Crypto heating (mining and poW) is very inefficient use of resource (as in, percentage of planet using crypto vs percent of total energy required for it). Not a smart thing for humanity to do.
3. Energy being limited, makes it shared resource. Crypto heating raises energy prices for others.
Its not so simple as “I paid I, so I do what I want”.
Are roads funded exclusively from tax collected from car taxes?
Aren’t bicycle and public transport users also funding roads also? Even if indirectly, by going to a shop that use those roads for supplies.
As far as I heard, roads cost a LOT to maintain (and more to build).
77 billion might be a small bucket in the ocean depending on the country.
This is public space, your freedom to drive a car impacts my commute time by bus.
For the sake of the argument: Have you seen evidence of scientific fact-x? (For example x=“water is made of H2 + O”)
Since set of “x” is so wast, no matter who you are, for most of “x” the answer will be “NO”. Time, accessible equipment and brain-capability constraints force us to outsource the evidence check to others. (even smartest scientists read papers instead of reproducing all experiments)
Part2:
I would like to distinguish two meanings/aspects of word “Science” used by in various contexts:
- scientific method - hypothesis, experiment, …
- “institution of society” -distinct group in society, view/expectation by the rest of society, education, trusted sources and similar
Methods of science and religion are very different.
But as “institutions”, they do have some parallels.
- Both offer basic explanation of reality.
- In both cases people trust stuff written by others.
- Both have consistency if you accept some basic truths.
To sum it up:
I (and most) believe that “carbon has 6 protons“ without evidence. The basis of this belief is trust in science (the institution of society) based on its authority, stated principles&process. But in the end laypeople don’t have evidence for that.
